Ann Nesby (born Lula Ann Bennett, in 955 Chicago, Il.) is the former lead singer of the Sounds of Blackness as well as songwriter who has written for Gladys Knight and Patti Labelle. She is reminiscent stylistically of Aretha Franklin. With roots in Gospel Nesby has recorded both secular and church music. In addition she has worked in movies as an actress (The Fighting Temptations 2003).
The track featured today is taken from her 2014 album Living My Life. This has has a strong gospel feel but is in fact a secular Soul song. Her vocal is offset by incredible harmonies from from her backing singers who weave along with her vocal. The instrumentation is sparse but effective. The tinkling guitar sound works in and out between the vocals filling the gaps between the vocals neatly. Remember is a pure joy just to listen to but it's also mid-tempo paced so two stepping and shuffling is on for those of us who like to get up and dance. Classic sounding Soul you should not miss in a contemporary setting. (Link is on the album cover).
As a recent release the album should be easily obtainable from all the usual sources.
Highly recommended,
